When Chill Insurance decided to evolve their digital strategy from Lead Generation to Online Fulfilment, the goal was simple – don’t give users a reason to pick up the phone. I was tasked with redesigning the online experience for their flagship car insurance product in order to untap the potential for online sales and reduce their reliance on call centre sales teams.

Keeping it simple

The original online form included 19 links away from the quote page as well as the phone number – the first thing I did was remove these distractions to create a clean and simple interface with a single focus.

I initiated a rationalisation of the question set to remove any that were non-essential, reducing the number of questions by 15%. To keep users focussed on the task in hand, I grouped the questions into five easily-digestible categories.

The numbered question groups as well as a progress indicator help to demonstrate how far the user has come.

Interaction Design

Fast and fluid

In order to ensure a fluid, responsive and consistent interaction experience across desktop, tablet and mobile, the application was built on Google’s Angular Material framework.

To speed up the input process, where possible, drop down menus were replaced by one-click or one-touch interactions such as check boxes or radio buttons and by more intuitive input elements such as autocomplete menus.

Dynamic Pricing

Beyond comparison

Focus group feedback and brand research revealed that some consumers were unaware that Chill compare many of the major insurance companies in one place – a message I was keen to get across as part of the redesign.

To that end, I designed a sidebar containing quote estimates from Chill’s panel of insurers, which dynamically updated and became more accurate as the user completed the form. Not only did this highlight a significant benefit offered by Chill, it encouraged users to complete the process to see their final quotes.
